The LEGO Group is going green with its new factory in southern Vietnam.
Construction of the factory begins in Binh Duong province this November, and 25,000 trees will be cleared in the process. In response to the trees that will be removed. The LEGO Group is planting 50,000 trees over a period of three years. In addition to the newly planted trees, the factory is set to be the company’s first carbon-neutral site.
“We are excited to have started the planting of 50,000 trees, as it marks the first of many activities on our sustainability journey in Vietnam,” says Preben Elnef, vice president and program lead for The LEGO Group in Vietnam. “A key reason for locating our new factory in Vietnam was the strong support from the Vietnamese government when it comes to our environmental sustainability agenda, and we look forward to their continued support during the construction phase.”
Presently, 15,000 trees have been planted, with additional trees set to be planted next year and into 2024. All trees are native to Vietnam, such as the golden oak and the rusty-shield tree. The LEGO Group will also be using a solar farm to power factory operations, continuing the goal of overall sustainability, as it is doing with its new facility that is being built in Virginia.
